In 1921, Gilbert and Beatrice Bates purchased Walnut Slope Ranch in Valley Center, California and moved their family from nearby Ramona. When my father Edgar Lewis Bates passed away, I inherited the baby book that my grandmother Beatrice Bates had created for him. Inside the front cover, she had glued several postcard-sized photographs of family homes in Santa Ana, California. The first one she captioned “The place where Edgar Lewis Bates was born Sep 17 1913.” On my annual trip to southern California, I located the house in the photograph and learned a bit about my family’s history in Santa Ana.

Last week I had occasion to visit Baker City, Oregon. My grandmother’s brother, Glenn Frank Lockwood, moved to Baker sometime between 1910 and 1917 and married Bessie Evelyn Beggs. My father had told me that their daughter Wilma had lived in a historic house on Resort Street. I thought I would see if could locate it and take some pictures.
